Citrix Patches Vulnerability in Workspace App for Windows

Published

on

Citrix this week announced that it has patched a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the Citrix Workspace app for Windows.

Tracked as CVE-2021-22907, the vulnerability could be exploited by local attackers to escalate their privileges to SYSTEM level. All supported versions of Citrix Workspace app for Windows are affected by the security hole.

The issue, however, only impacts those Windows systems on which the Workspace application was installed using an account with administrator privileges (either local or domain admin).

Systems on which a standard Windows user account was used to install the Citrix Workspace app are not affected.

Furthermore, given that the vulnerability only impacts the Windows version of the application, machines running on other operating systems are not affected either.

Citrix has addressed the flaw with the release of Citrix Workspace App 2105 and later and Citrix Workspace App 1912 LTSR CU4 and later cumulative updates.

The tech giant advises customers to update their applications to a patched version as soon as possible, to ensure they are safe from potential exploitation attempts. Those who have automatic updates enabled will automatically receive the security update.

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued an alert on the vulnerability, warning that attackers could abuse it to take over vulnerable machines.

“Citrix has released security updates to address a vulnerability in Citrix Workspace App for Windows. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to take control of an affected system,” CISA notes.
